Course Details

Early language learning is the foundation on which later success across the curriculum is built. Much has been made of the ‘language gap’ between disadvantaged children and their peers by the time they start statutory schooling. We begin by looking at the reasons for this ‘gap’ and how it can be narrowed and closed by early years practitioners. Using research, video footage and through practising together, this session will strengthen the skills of attendees in developing the language and vocabulary of all our youngest children. All adults working with young children in a range of settings are welcome.

The course will include:

  • A look at the ‘word gap’ and the research explaining why this exists.
  • What does the research tell us our youngest children need to develop their language and vocabulary?
  • What this looks like in practise
  • Communication friendly environments
  • Opportunities to analyse your current approaches and set targets for improvement
  • Group work practising contingent conversation
  • A look at targeted vocabulary teaching in the classroom
