Course Details
This course is suitable for classroom practitioners, Early Years leaders and school leaders keen to improve the Early years mathematics provision in their school.
This one day course will offer an opportunity to explore and develop teaching approaches in your Foundation Stage, drawing on the key principles of mastery in mathematics. Teachers will discuss and analyse the structure of a mathematics lesson and will have the opportunity to observe a Maths lesson in a Reception classroom. The day will develop your subject knowledge and pedagogy, identifying key milestones in children’s number sense. Practitioners will also spend time discussing what makes effective independent provision in the Foundation stage and how we can support children to become enthusiastic and inquisitive mathematicians. They will leave with a range of practical approaches to embed the key mathematical ideas and concepts, which will contribute to outstanding outcomes for all.
The course will include:
Discussion around the key aspects of ‘mastery’ in Maths
Identifying the key milestones for children in relation to number and counting
Observation of a Maths lesson in a Reception classroom and discussion of lesson structure
Opportunities to play games that you can take back to the classroom
Ideas on how to use picture books within Maths
Exploration of teaching techniques, activities and lesson sequences
Discussion around how to develop a mathematical environment
What you can take home:
Practical ideas for on-going mathematics provision in Early years
Lots of practical and engaging activity ideas to develop number sense within whole class and small groups
List of online resources and places to go for support
List of picture books that can be used within Maths teaching with some example flipcharts
