Course Details

(postponed)

This course offers an exciting opportunity for teachers and maths subject leaders to develop their understanding of how to use the bar model to support mathematical learning in both KS1 and KS2.

This practical course will focus on how to promote conceptual understanding of number objectives using the bar model. There will be the opportunity to examine how the bar model can support understanding of the four operations and the inverse relationships between them. Linked to this there will also be the chance to explore the Bar Model as a representation when problem solving, working with fractions or introducing algebra.

The course will include:

Exploring the different types of bar models
How to use bar models to support the four operations
How to use bar model to support understanding of fractions
Progression in reasoning and understanding
Review of bar model application in KS1 and KS2 SATS
Exposure to high quality resources
Examples of bar model use in KS1 and KS2

What you can take home:

Resources to use the bar model in your own classroom
A deep knowledge and understanding of how and when to use the bar model
Ideas of how to implement use of bar models in your own setting

This course will take place on Zoom and will be 1.5 hours. Modules for self-study will be sent prior to this session.
