Developing Reading in the EYFS

This course will support teachers in reviewing their subject knowledge and developing their pedagogy in order to deliver effective guided reading routinely.  Structured guided reading is examined in the broader context of developing reading opportunities and a literate environment in early years settings. We will also look at the importance of the adult and early speaking and listening. The course will ensure that teachers understand how best to apply and develop phonic knowledge at the same time as developing other strategies and teaching good comprehension. There will be opportunities to observe and analyse lessons.  Through the day, delegates will be able to chart progression of guided reading, and understand how to run an effective session for all learners at any stage in the EYFS.

The course will include:

  • Discussion around pre-reading skills and beginning reading in EYFS
  • An overview of what guided reading can look like within Nursery and Reception
  • Ideas on how to develop questioning and comprehension
  • Opportunities to discuss and analyse lesson examples and filmed lessons
  • Ideas on how to plan for the highest attainers, as well as EAL learners
  • Discussion around the logistics and organisation of guided reading

What you can take home:

  • Example planning for a reading session in EYFS Core book lists
  • Scaffolds and support cards to use with your children to support reading development
