Course Details

This course is aimed at teachers and leaders in upper KS2, who are re-engaging pupils and targeting them to make rapid progress in order to secure key knowledge and skills, and achieve well in writing.   It will be particularly helpful to those new to teaching in this phase, or those responsible for curriculum planning and  training others.    

Teachers will further develop their subject knowledge, as the course will review, in depth, what it means to write both at a secure level and greater depth in Year 5 and Year 6 -through excellent text structure and organisation, vocabulary choices and stylistic devices, sentence structure, punctuation and authorial control. It will provide teachers with practical and strategic approaches to developing this knowledge and these skills in pupils and will specifically address approaches to addressing gaps in learning caused by the pandemic.

The course will include:

    • Analysis of high quality writing
    • Development of teacher subject knowledge
    • Three observations of shared writing (using filmed lessons)
    • How to use editing in the classroom to best effect
    • How Visual Literacy can be used to create high quality outcomes
    • Engaging tasks to teach high level grammar expectations
    • Practical ideas and techniques to teach the knowledge and skills required, ready for immediate implementation
    • A review of strategies to address gaps in learning due to the pandemic
    • A review of helpful free online resources to support distance learning when needed
