This online course is designed for teachers and leaders who want to review, refine, or develop a coherent handwriting curriculum across the primary school. High-quality handwriting teaching requires clear progression, consistent expectations, and strong alignment with the wider English curriculum.
The session will explore how handwriting development can be carefully sequenced from the foundations in EYFS through to fluent, automatic handwriting in Key Stage 2. Particular focus will be given to how schools can use Oak National Academy curriculum progression to underpin curriculum design, while ensuring teaching complements and aligns closely with a chosen phonics programme.
The course will include:
✏️ Exploring progression in handwriting from EYFS through to KS2 in line with the national curriculum
✏️ Reviewing in detail, model progression within Reception, including how handwriting teaching can sit alongside phonics instruction.
✏️ Outlining how Oak National Academy curriculum progression can support curriculum design and ensure comprehensive coverage.
✏️ Reviewing approaches to intervention and additional provision for pupils who are under-attaining or who have not secured the foundations of handwriting.
✏️ Considering effective approaches to handwriting home learning that reinforce classroom teaching.
✏️ Exploring strategies for monitoring, reviewing, and tracking handwriting development across the school.
Participants will receive a model curriculum to use as a starting point for development or review within their own setting, including exemplar slide decks for each stage of teaching, model progression documents and staff guidance to support consistent handwriting instruction.
