igh-quality science teaching develops pupils’ curiosity about the world, strengthens their understanding of key scientific concepts and equips them with the knowledge and skills to think and work like scientists. This course will support ECTs in developing the subject knowledge, pedagogical understanding and curriculum expertise required to teach science confidently and effectively across the primary phase.

Participants will develop a secure understanding of the National Curriculum for Science and explore how carefully sequenced learning can build both substantive knowledge and disciplinary knowledge. The course will focus on ensuring that science lessons are ambitious, engaging and accessible to all learners, whilst maintaining a clear focus on progression.

The course will include:

• Developing a secure understanding of the National Curriculum for Science and the progression of knowledge and skills across Key Stages 1 and 2.
• Exploring the distinction between substantive and disciplinary knowledge and understanding how both contribute to scientific understanding.
• Securing knowledge of the different enquiry types and working scientifically skills, enabling teachers to plan purposeful investigations rather than isolated practical activities.
• Understanding how to design sequences of learning that build scientific knowledge over time and address common misconceptions.
• Learning strategies to support all learners to access and succeed in science, including those with SEND and pupils who are disadvantaged.
• Exploring practical approaches to developing teacher subject knowledge and confidence in science.
• Opportunities to analyse filmed lessons, scrutinise pupils’ work and discuss effective practice with experienced science leaders.
• Access to practical resources and planning approaches that can be implemented immediately in the classroom.
