Securing the highest standards in Writing in EYFS & KS1

Course Information

This course is aimed at teachers and leaders in EYFS and KS1, alongside English subject leaders, who are teaching and targeting all pupils to achieve the highest standards in writing, based on strong foundational knowledge and skills, which will prepare them for the new key stage’s curriculum.

Teachers will develop their subject knowledge of what it means to write securely and at depth in EYFS and KS1, without accelerating through the curriculum. The course will explore what small steps of progression look like in key aspects of the curriculum and will provide teachers with engaging practical and strategic approaches to developing these.

The course will include the following:

  • Observations of the teaching and learning of writing specific to year group (using filmed lessons)
  • Review of micro-progression in key aspects of writing
  • How to best assess writing
  • How to secure the fundamentals in each year group
  • Maximising the benefit of the writing process
  • How visual media can be used to create high quality outcomes
  • How to scaffold learning to create low threshold high ceiling outcomes
  • A wide range of practical ideas and techniques to teach the knowledge and skills required, ready for immediate implementation

  • Planning, flipcharts and resources for a sample unit of work per year group
  • A range of practical ideas resources to support teacher subject knowledge and for use in the classroom.
