Developing fluency of times tables and preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check

Course Information

This course will support class teachers and subject leaders in developing a holistic approach towards developing fluency of times tables within the school. The session will help delegates develop their subject knowledge in key areas to improve individual and school knowledge and pedagogy. This will be in relation to number relationships and structures, models and images as well as research driven approaches to practice and recall. It will incorporate many practical approaches for immediate implementation, as well as considering leadership implications in relation to both the intent and implementation of the Mathematics curriculum.

The course will include:

  • An understanding of the meaning of fluency and its focus within the curriculum, considering it in isolation as one of the five big ideas in a teaching for mastery approach.
  • A review of the key subject knowledge required for secure understanding of multiplication and division
  • A review of progression
  • Exploring key lesson types
  • Exploration of subordinated practice and recall

What you can take away

  • A model progression for the teaching of all fluency objectives – including times tables
  • Practical ideas – ready to use in the classroom
