Developing your English Curriculum: Coherence, Progression and Inclusion

Course Information

This course will be an opportunity for English, Reading and Writing subject leads and senior leaders to explore curriculum intent and implementation in relation to the English Curriculum, with an in-depth focus on the elements which relate to Reading and Writing. The discussion will be framed around both the content of the Ofsted inspection framework and considerations of how to ensure it is an inclusive curriculum, which celebrates diversity and promotes global citizenship. It will allow attendees to closely examine curriculum progression and cohesion – looking at examples of best practice, research and other useful documents. It will also all look at ways to address gaps in learning and intervention approaches. Attendees will have time to reflect on their own school curriculum and draw out the strengths and areas for development. Time will be spent action planning for dissemination of curriculum intent across your own staff.

The course will include:

  • An in-depth focus on progression in writing: text types, sentence-structures, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation
  • Curriculum mapping: planning for progression of knowledge and skills
  • How to ensure the English curriculum is inclusive: celebrates diversity, develops empathy and promotes critical thinking
  • A review of whole school approaches to presentation
  • A self-evaluation of the Reading Curriculum, considering the Ofsted reading priorities such as fluency, development of knowledge and skills and reading for pleasure
  • Sharing of our reflections and experience of subject deep dives
  • Implementing change: effective subject leadership
