Course Information

This course will support teachers in reviewing their subject knowledge and developing their pedagogy in order to deliver effective group and whole class reading routinely. The course will ensure that teachers understand how best to apply and develop phonic knowledge at the same time as developing other strategies and teaching good comprehension. It will also tackle the common difficulties of classroom organisation, adult support and independent groups. There will be opportunities to observe and analyse lessons as well as talking through a range of different texts suitable for KS1. Teachers will understand how to run an effective session for all learners at any stage in the age range as well as promoting a love of reading with their children.

The course will include:

  • An introduction to Guided Reading and how it links to other aspects of Literacy
  • Discussion around pre-reading skills and developing phonic knowledge
  • Examining the structure of a teacher led group session
  • Discussion around how to develop questioning and comprehension
  • Opportunity to watch filmed lessons, as well as a filmed observation in a KS1 classroom
  • Time dedicated to discussing the range of different texts
  • Ideas on how to promote a love of reading
  • Discussion around the practicalities of group and whole class reading, including ideas for independent activities
